Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Teachers:

You won't make it through college with your low math aptitude.

  • How I responded:

I held on to my dream of becoming a teacher. It seemed like a dream when I first set up my apartment ready for the first day at college. The math obstacle reared its head as I encountered it first to fail. When I regrouped, I found a math course that gave me a step up to the harder algebra. Then, I passed it but barely. Still a pass was all I needed.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder was not so prevalent or well known when I grew up. I was restless and had difficulty focusing on tasks in school. Often I brought my work home to complete in my alone time. My achievement suffered.
