Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Parents:
You need to take more risks and start your own business.
How I responded:
I like working in teams and working for a greater cause, but I'm less of a risk-taker. For most of my life, my dad has really pushed me to start my own business. I tried that for a bit, but it was very unsettling. So, I got myself back into a large organization where I felt more comfortable to be challenged without the risk of running your own business. I know quite well that the best place for me to be in is a large corporate environment where I can add a lot of value.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
For most of my life, my dad has really pushed me to start my own business. Later on in his career, he launched his own business and it was very successful, and regrets having not done it sooner. He wanted me to do the same.
Early in my career, I moved really quickly in my first organization - higher education. At a relatively young age, I was already reporting to the president of a university, and there was little room for me to grow. I was at a real crossroads.
