I've taken a lot of twists and turns
1.
First, I got my GED in high school and exited out of school early to work.
2.
I got a job and was working.
3.
I got married and had two kids.
4.
Then, I decided to go to Fullerton College.
5.
Then, I transferred to the California State University of Fullerton.
6.
I switched my major from music to journalism, and finally decided on English.
7.
Then I got my first teaching job at Carver Middle School in Los Angeles.
8.
Finally, I became an 8th grade English teacher at Ladera Vista Junior High in Fullerton.

How I responded to discouragement

I experienced the struggles of balancing working full time and attending school full time. Growing up, I heard the discouragement that college was optional.
How I responded:
Times have changed and I hope most parents encourage a college or vocational education. Sometimes you have to be your own (and sometimes only) cheerleader.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I worked hard to pursue an education all on my own. I had a full-time job and kept up with school. I overcame this obstacle through dedication and hard work.
My family was very working class and we did not have spare money for anything but the essentials, and that was a stretch.
