My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
I graduated from high school and attended a few courses in college. I struggle with transportation, financial issues and not knowing what I really wanted to do.
2.
I married a year after high school, dropped out of college, and started working. I discovered minimum wage was not any fun.
3.
I went back to school full force at the age of 21 and pursued a degree in teaching. My love for books and reading allowed me to pursue a field that I enjoy.
4.
I loved being a reading teacher for 11 years but discovered that many of my students had many personal issues. I returned to college to pursue a counseling degree.
5.
Being a school counselor for 14 years has allowed me to speak to my students about their Academic and Personal Journey. I provide information, resources and options to allow students to grow.
6.
I recently returned to college to pursue an LPC (License Professional Counselor) certification. I would like to continue my path in school counseling and enrich my career with my new certification.
7.
In addition, I have published a children's book. I am also a certified laughter yoga leader and do presentations emphasizing emotional well being.
8.
Education has taught me there is no end of the road. Options are always available for those who choose to work for it. Beginning is the key factor and consistency in reaching the goal is important.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
Unfortunately, words of discouragement included: "you are not an honor roll student, it will take too long, and how will you go to college and pay for it."
How I responded:
Look for the positive reinforcement and people who can guide you with information and resources to help you reach your goals. Mentors, Coaches, Teachers, Counselors, Administrators, Pastor, Family, Friends and Community members are always willing to help. Take the first step, learn to overcome obstacles and challenges, ask questions, do not be afraid to ask for help and most of all when opportunity presents itself don't be afraid to put your foot in the door.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
My mother was a single parent with 5 children. FAFSA was a great resource in discovering what type of aids were available.
I am the first member in my family to receive a college degree. It's important to ask questions and to learn from those who are more knowledgeable and experienced. Overcome challenges by staying consistent and persistent. Keep moving forward!
