Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

You should not study to be an archaeologist because it does not make any money. You will not be able to find any other jobs if you decide to step out of doing archaeology.

  • How I responded:

I wanted to be an archaeologist since I was 8 years old. I knew it would be hard to find a job and I would probably have to relocate but I was up for that challenge. As long as you are willing to face the challenges that come with selecting certain careers, be realistic about them and plan accordingly there is nothing that can hold you back from what you are setting out to do! It has been quite a road and I have worn (or still wearing) many hats but if I had to do it all over again I would!

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I was born and raised in Belgium. I moved with my American husband to Iowa City in 2004 and even though a lot of things were the same there were quite (and still are) some cultural differences.
