Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Parents:
Careers in social work don't make any money and have a high degree of burnout.
How I responded:
I consider my opportunity to INVEST in others my greatest work. I leave the ownership of what they do with the investment in their hands. My responsibility is to give, the harvest may not come for 20 years, but the seed had to be planted...take joy in planting liberally and without discretion.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I had at least one friend die every year for 5 yrs in a row from car wrecks, suicide and freak medical infections. I fought against withdrawing from caring for people, because it hurts when people you care about die. Living without loving is dying.
