Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Peers:

It's so depressing to see the children suffer. It will take you too long to get your degree.

  • How I responded:

I was inspired by the strength and perseverance of many children with disabilities and their families. I focused on their willingness to try and try again to learn a simple skill like sitting up and their acceptance of differences in others and themselves. If they can do it, whatever it is, then I have no excuse not to try and not give up.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • It may not seem like a big deal, but I am white and my husband is black. We experienced discrimination and rejection from some family. We focused on love and acceptance. This has helped us when our lesbian daughter came out to us.
