Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Parents:

We don't understand your love of German(y).

  • How I responded:

They let me take a trip to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, etc. when I was in high school. They thought maybe I would get it out of my system. I went back in college. When I went to Berlin, I lived there for 4 years. But I couldn't really have a career based on the German language. I continually fell back on the math. When I tutored, almost all of my students had math anxiety. Mostly I taught them to breathe. All of my students ended up finding out that they could do math. Math is awesome.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I am an incest survivor. I was pretty depressed for a while but individual & group therapy was invaluable. I found I was not alone. I had the support of my husband and church as well. I had done nothing wrong. I was wronged. Get the help you need.
