Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
If it wasn't for me, you would be living in a gutter someplace. (my parents) You're going to do great things. (my mentors, professors) Oh, that thing you do. (my family) Oh, you're a girl, you'll know how to cut cake better than me. (male co-worker)
How I responded:
Noise is someone else's attempt at defining who you are or should be. An easy way to overcome this is to have standards. Have standards for how you expect yourself to act, others to act, how others treat you, and how others treat the world. This does a great deal for your confidence. And confidence is crucial for landing a job and finding a career you love. Standards do a great deal for creating balance in your life also. Its not just about having 'success', it's about being a well rounded individual.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I went into foster care with $80 to my name. Use what resources are available, but work hard. Realize from the get go you are going to make big mistakes. Review and learn from them.
I am black adopted into a white family in the Midwest. In college, black students ridiculed me for not being "black" enough. Remember that your culture/ethnicity is only one piece of you. It's OK to go against the grain and define yourself.
College was never encouraged, so I had to be resourceful about finding information and people who would support my path to success. Never be too proud to ask a question.
