Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Parents:
You should have the farming done every morning and dinner on the table every night. You should have a job at the age of 16. You're a woman you have to be home at 9 o'clock, however your younger brother can go out as late as he wants because he is a male.
How I responded:
To overcome my noise I chose a school that was far enough away from my parents that every action I made was not controlled. However, I did go to a college that was in the same state so I was not too far away. My brother is up here this year at the same college and my dad still calls me to make sure I am taking care of EVERYTHING for him. I have tried explaining how to do things to him instead of for him like I always had to do.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
My family lives a very old life style and on a big ranch. My dad still has the mind set of the older days where the women belong in the kitchen, etc. My advice would be to get out and get involved in something else that lets you be in charge.
