Day In The Life

Software Technologist

I do strategy. I invest in computer science education non-profits using technology at scale to achieve social good.

My Day to Day

I currently wear two hats. The first hat is I am a Berkeley Computer Science Education PhD candidate. I spend a lot of time researching and writing my dissertation. I do most of my work around artificial intelligence and how people reason (human cognition); I'm working on applying that to how people learn. The second hat is I help Google with strategy surrounding nonprofit investment in computer science education. There, I manage a $15M CSEd portfolio and work to grow that portfolio.

Skills & Education

Advice for getting started

It took baby steps to realize my own potential. I decided I could start doing micro-heroic things to increase my confidence and become comfortable embracing failure.

Here's the path I took:

  • High School

  • Bachelor's Degree

    Computer Science

    University of Memphis

  • Graduate Degree

    Electrical and Electronics Engineering

    University of Memphis

  • Doctorate

    Computer Science

    University of California-Berkeley

Life & Career Milestones

My path in life took a while to figure out

  • 1.

Currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Berkeley; studies human cognition-how people reason and learn.

  • 2.

Grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, where they never had a constant power supply.

  • 3.

Because there was no power, she didn't spend time watching TV, and she had to "invent" her play-that forces you into "maker mode."

  • 4.

Always liked studying how people learn; believes the best way to educate people is by teaching them how to educate themselves.

  • 5.

Says it took her a while to jump into one thing-"it was like when you go to the beach and you put your little toe in," but now she's "fully immersed."

  • 6.

Huge Star Wars fan; says she honestly chose UC Berkeley so she could be closer to Skywalker Ranch.

  • 7.

When she was younger, she chickened out of going to a huge conference where she could've met some of her film and computer graphics heroes.

  • 8.

After that, she started taking baby steps-speaking at a computer education day, going to small conferences-and now major engagements don't intimidate her.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Myself:

I'm just this little piddly thing, what could I possibly offer to any of these people [in technology].

  • How I responded:

It took baby steps to realize my own potential. I decided I could start doing micro-heroic things to increase my confidence and become comfortable embracing failure.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I grew up in Nigeria. The beauty and tragedy of Nigeria is that we don't have constant power so growing up I wasn't watching tv in my spare time. I had to invent my play and be creative; that has shaped me into who I am now.
