Day In The Life Of A Ph.D. Candidate And Teaching Assistant

My Day to Day

As a Ph.D. candidate, I study immigrant and refugee communities and issues of poverty and immigration enforcement. My family is Vietnamese, so I'm really interested in examining how welfare programs, policing, and immigration enforcement systems impact our community. As a teaching assistant, I run discussion sections, where I help students understand class material, answer any questions, and prepare for assignments. I also hold office hours and spend a lot of time grading.

Defining Moments

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I come from an Asian refugee family and often felt othered by my peers in the affluent conservative community I grew up in.

  • In my higher education journey, there's rarely been a time where I wasn't working at least two jobs while going to school. I love academia but I'm not always able to focus completely on it because I have to supplement myself through other work.
