Life & Career Milestones
My path in life has been direct
1.
I was born and raised in New Mexico.
2.
After earning my degree in English and Spanish, I was working as a bartender and was asked by customers to work at a hospital as a teacher.
3.
So, I entered the field of education unexpectedly, starting my teaching journey at a hospital's mental institution for children.
4.
My passion for teaching deepened during my time in Oaxaca, Mexico, where I taught English and learned to embrace the challenges and joys of instructing both children and adults.
5.
Returning to the U.S., I committed to bilingual education, obtaining a certificate and a master's degree, which led me to teach in diverse settings in Santa Fe and Los Alamos, New Mexico.
6.
My role as an instructional coach allowed me to witness the breadth of educators' dedication and inspired me to pursue further studies with a focus on curriculum and instruction.
7.
Transitioning beyond classroom teaching, I embraced leadership roles that allowed me to influence educational policy and practice on a broader scale.
8.
My work with the New Mexico legislature as a non-partisan staff member for an education committee has enabled me to advocate for equitable policies grounded in research and best practices.
